Hibiscus has been admired and worked with all over the world for a very long time--especially in tropical regions. Hibiscus, also commonly known as Roselle, has been utilized in medicine, textile dyeing, art practices, and culinary culture in Africa, India, China, Southeast Asia, Mexico and the Central Americas! Contrary to popular assumption, it is typically the calyx of the plant that is utilized in medicine--not the gorgeous flowers that we all could immediately identify. The most important information in understanding the way a plant works medicinally is understanding their energetics. Hibiscus is an astringent, drying plant, giving it a tonifying, styptic quality. This can help dry up excessive secretions and support tissue functionality in the body. The cooling signature of Hibiscus counterbalances heat in the body, bringing down our literal temperatures but also helping to quell inflammation in different body systems--especially those it has an affinity for.
