*indicated in conditions of deficiency and debility--especially related to the Earth element in 5 Element Medicine
Astragalus Root has been used in Persian and Traditional Chinese Medicine systems for thousands of years. Their Chinese name, Huang Qi, means “Big Yellow” and refers to their connection with the Earth Element. This element rules the Spleen and Stomach in Five Element Theory, and is dominant now during the season of harvest. Yellow is the color of the Earth Element and is associated with supporting muscle integrity, immunity, digestion, the quality of blood, and the transforming of nutrients into Qi from what we take into the body.
Astragalus also builds Wei Qi which is the energetic barrier that protects your body from outside influences--such as wind, cold, and pathogens/illness. This root is an extremely valuable ally in these times of constant bombardment and repeat infections that settle in the lungs, as Astragalus is antiviral/bacterial and has an affinity for the lungs and cardiovascular system alongside the immune system. I love working with Astragalus in the realm of preventative care, but also in post-illness formulas when the body needs to rebuild strength and functionality. Beyond immunity and support of the Earth element, this root is an incredible blood builder and all around neutral adaptogen that is not as stimulating as others in the category
Astragalus is a great addition to fall and winter time soups and stews! In the world of Chinese medicine, it is traditional to prepare the medicine this way, as soup is practically a decoction extract! I also love adding the root to herbal syrup recipes with other immunomodulators such as elderberries, reishi + turkey tail mushrooms, and vitamin C rich plants. It’s important to note that Astragalus is typically used in Immune Tonic formulas rather than in Acute situations. This herb is very supportive for those who live with chronic debility, especially immune deficiency/dysfunction accompanied by chronic fatigue and blood deficiency. We see the most support from Astragalus with consistent use over time, as it takes time and patience to rebuild strength and vitality--especially when living with chronic conditions.
